For 4 months
in 1983 I worked in Somalia for a British company
contracted by the Somali government to survey the vegetation of the
southern region of the country. I worked with other biologist from
England, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada along with Somalis who
assisted us. At this time Somalia was relatively stable, although still
officially at war with Ethiopia. I never imagined at that time what
would befall the country years later when civil war and famine would
bring horrible suffering to its people and destruction to many of the
small towns we passed through and its capital Mogadishu.
These photograhps were taken during the 2 to 3 week long safaris we went on to collect plants and in Mogadishu. |
